From its humble beginnings around a campfire, the soulful acoustic/electric songs of S.K. Andre and Raymond John have developed into a refreshing original full band sound. Fen Hollen Sprouts is the debut CD by this Minnesota-based progressive folk-rock band. Fen Hollen is a fictional place, in which stands a doorway. As in life itself, one must decide if they should enter this doorway. The decision was made to create an original sound from an acoustic duo. S.K. Andre is traditionally a creative musician with a strong grasp on band arrangements and music production while Raymond John could be found hashing out acoustic favorites in ski town bars. The two had met early in age, and eventually followed their own musical paths. When reunited in 1996, they realized that the more they played together, the more they discovered their music styles were in fact more parallel than they had expected. Later on they exchanged some original songs each had written and intertwined them into new material, the amazing results heard on the Fen Hollen Sprouts recording. To use a combining technique, which could keep the songs close to their original versions while linking them with co-written transitions, passages, and endings, is the sound Fen Hollen has established as their unique signiture. These ideas demonstrate their musical influences, such as classic bands who recorded albums as a whole, instead of an album of singles. In these days of 3 1/2 minute chart busters it could seem unorthodox, but it is the desire to create without boundaries which is the root of Fen Hollen Sprouts. UPDATE: As of March 1999, Fen Hollen Sprouts has sold about 500 copies, and is receiving local airplay.
